Skaven Expansion; Part 1

Time to start working on the Skaven expansion. On January 30th, I did a poll in the facebook group "Warhammer Quest!" on what Skaven models I should paint first.

 The results of the poll:

Packmaster got 45%
Ratling Gun Team 27%
Rat Swarms 9%
Poison Wind Mortor Team 9%
Doom-Flayer Team 9%

Skaven Packmaster Paint:

That does mean painting 28 rats to fill out 4 bases.

Metal Bitz: "Gehenna's Gold" & "Runefang Steel" both /w "Agrax Earthshade" Wash
Claws: "White Scar" white

Gas Tank: "Moot Green"
Power Cables: "Flash Gitz Yellow"

This is the Dwarf Blood Bowl Team Death Roller /w a Skaven Gutter runner from Mordhiem riding it, instead of a Dwarf. Someone else paired these  two models together and put it on Telegram. I used Blender to cover any obviously Dwarven Symbols with Skaven Bells.

I wanted the Doom-Flayer to have a 90s GW feel and this felt right.

Warp-Grinder Team Paint:
Skin: "Kislev Flesh"  /w "Skeleton Horde" Wash
Metal Bitz: "Gehenna's Gold" & "Runefang Steel" both /w "Agrax Earthshade" Wash
Claws & Teeth: "White Scar" white
Nose, Tail, and Ears: "Emporer's Children" Pink
Gas Lines, Electric Generator Glow, Grinder Crystal: "Moot Green", some times highlighted with mix (50/50 Moot Green & White Scar), and some times with Agrax Earthshade Wash

This is a conversion of my own making. Its the Ratling Gun with the mini gun barrels replaced with a Grinder Crystal and a Electric Backpack added to Fuel Hauler.

The first 10 Skaven expansion models together.

Lair of the Orc Lord

I now have all of the Skaven Expansion printed, but wanted to finish the few miniatures I already had printed for the Lair of the Orc Lord. I was already using Gorgut as my Orc Champion//Hero model and Skabnoze as my Orc Shaman. So that leaves the following models.

Bogoff, the Snotling. (was having a hell of a time getting a good picture of this guy)

Skin: "Moot Green" /w "Agrax Earthshade" Wash
Loin Cloth: "Sotek Green" /w "Skeleton Horde" Wash
Metal Bitz: "Runefang Steel" & "Gehenna"s Gold" both /w "Agrax Earthshade" Wash
Teeth: "Scar White" /w "Skeleton Horde" Wash

Growler, Squig Hound

Mohawk: "Moot Green" then dry brushed over with Mix (50% Moot Green & 50% Scar White)
Claws & Teeth: "Screaming Skull" /w "Skeleton Horde" Wash
Skin: "Mephiston Red" /w "Agrax Earthshade"
Gums: "Xereus Purple" /w "Agrax Earthshade"

Gubbinz, Goblin Jester

Skin: "Moot Green" /w "Agrax Earthshade" Wash
Half the outfit: "Flash Gitz Yellow" /w "Skeleton Horde" Wash
Other Half the outfit: "Mephiston Red" /w "Skeleton Horde" Wash
Stick for Puppet: "XV-88"
Metal Bitz:  "Runefang Steel"  /w "Agrax Earthshade" Wash
Teeth: "Scar White" /w "Skeleton Horde" Wash

Here is all 5 together.

I've been having a problem with my Zombie Dragon. I couldn't get the old version I wanted by the time I needed to print it, so I kitbashed my own. The big issue here, was the model I used was designed to be quite a big bigger than the size I printed it at, so his wings kept breaking. He was just too delicate at this size. In the last month or two I was able to get a hold of both the old school zombie dragon models.  The 4th edition one wasn't scaling down very well, so I decided to use the 6th edition one. I don't like the wings the 6th edtion one came with (they were the generic dragon wings used on the other healthy dragons). So I resized the 4th edition Zombie Dragon Wings to work with the 6th.

Skin: "Flash Gitz Yellow" /w "Agrax Earthshade" Wash
Wounds and Intestines: "Mephiston Red" /w "Agrax Earthshade" Wash
Scales: "Xereus Purple"
Axe Staff: "Rhinox Hide"
Horn & Bones: "Screaming Skull" /w "Skeleton Horde" Wash
Claws & Teeth: "White Scar"

Next time, I'll be knocking out some Skaven goodies.

That's all for this post, may your lantern always stay lit.

Catacombs of Terror

I have set up several plates to print off the expanded Skaven Monster Encounter list. They are not printed yet, so I figured I paint up the Catacombs of Terror expansion I printed off a while ago.

I have already painted Gunther Laranscheld and am using him as my basic Necromancer.

Paint Gunther:

Skin: "Kislev Flesh" /w "Skeleton Horde" Wash
Skull: "Screaming Skull" /w "Skeleton Horde" Wash
Robes: "Naggaroth Night" /w "Agrax Earthshade" Wash and then dry brush lightly with "Genestealer Purple"
Outer Cape: "Adminstratum Grey" /w "Templar Black" wash
Inner Cape & Raised Collar:  "Mephiston Red" /w "Agrax Earthshade" Wash
Metal Bitz: "Runefang Steel" & "Gehenna"s Gold" both /w "Agrax Earthshade" Wash
Shoes: "Abaddon Black"

Paint Luthor the Hunchback:

Skin: "Flash Gitz Yellow" /w "Skeleton Horde" Wash
Robes: "XV-88" /w "Agrax Earthshade" Wash
Cowl: "Screaming Skull" /w "Skeleton Horde" Wash
Pants:  "Mephiston Red" /w "Agrax Earthshade" Wash
Metal Bitz:  /w "Agrax Earthshade" Wash
Club: "Runefang Steel" & "Catachan Flesh" both /w "Agrax Earthshade" Wash
Shoes: "Abaddon Black"

Much earlier, I painted 12 Tomb Guardians using a simpler model. As I finally have access to these STLs, I'm going to replace them with these below. I only have 8 printed so far, so I painted up these 3 to "finish" Catacombs of Terror.

Paint Tomb Guardians:

Robes: "Moot Green" /w "Agrax Earthshade" Wash
Bones: "Screaming Skull" /w "Skeleton Horde" Wash
Metal Bitz: "Runefang Steel" /w "Agrax Earthshade" Wash

Paint Dread King & Throne:

Robes & Throne Cushions: "Mephiston Red" /w "Agrax Earthshade" Wash
Bones: "Screaming Skull" /w "Skeleton Horde" Wash
Horns on Throne: "Scar White" /w "Skeleton Horde" Wash
Staff Wings, Throne Columns, & Crown's Veil: "Moot Green"
Teeth & Eye: "Scar White"
Metal Bitz: "Runefang Steel" & "Gehenna"s Gold" both /w "Agrax Earthshade" Wash

Paint Grimoire:

Pages: "Kislev Flesh"  /w "Skeleton Horde" WashMetal Bitz: "Gehenna"s Gold" /w "Agrax Earthshade" Wash
Book Stand: "Sotek Green" /w "Agrax Earthshade" Wash
Bookmark: "Flash Gitz Yellow"
Book Cover: "XV-88"

I think for the next blog I'll be painting what I'm missing from "Lair of the Orc Lord" and a replacement for one of the large monsters I found a more classic STL for.

That's all for this post, may your lantern always stay lit.

Undead Expansion; Part 3

Down to 2 monsters left on our custom Expanded Undead Monster Encounter Table.  Morghast (a giant ghost) and Bone Giant. Lets start with Bone Giant. I found the Bone Giant on Telegram.

Leather Straps & Loin Cloth: "XV-88" /w "Agrax Earthshade" Wash
Bones: "Screaming Skull" /w "Skeleton Horde" Wash
Teeth: "Whit Scar"
Metal Bitz:  "Gehenna"s Gold" /w "Agrax Earthshade" Wash
Eye Sockets, Nose, & Belt: "Abaddon Black"

Next up Morghast. We added this to make a "Giant Ghost" and I think we were originally thinking the Mourngul from Forge-World, pictured below.

Forge-World model called Mourngul.

For whatever reason we ended up calling it Morghast, which is a newer Nighthaunt miniature from Age of Sigmar. Bob, my buddy, wrote the rules for our Morghast. When he made his Morghast he had gotten a free STL from some where and used that model. He was generous enough to pass the STL over to me and I used the same one. I shrank it down, made the model's hand sink into my custom base, and removed a few of the chains & its tongue to simplify the model.

Here is all 34 expanded Undead Monster Encounter models.

 The List adds:
3x Bast Swarms, 3x Spirit Hosts, 5x Undead Wolves, 6x Enslaved Souls, 3x Carrion, 6x Spectral Guard,  6x Revanants, 1x Bone Giant, & 1x Morghast.

Undead Expansion; Part 2

The next 3 Undead Monster groups are all Ghosts. Basically its to add Nighthaunts from Age of Sigmar into Warhammer Quest. Chainsrasp Horde ( which we are calling Enslaved Souls), Craven Throne Guard (which we are calling Spectral Guard), & Bladegheist Revenants (which we are just calling Revanents). Bob designed the rules for these and painted up some great looking proxies. You can find them on his facebook page for  "Studio Bob".

The issue I had was, if possible, I want my miniatures to have a late 80's- late 90's look. The cool thing about ghosts is, you can really make anything a ghost with the right paint scheme. Enslaved Souls would need models first. The Cursed Company, are Mercenary Skeletons that were available during 6th edition, if we paint these like ghosts, I can be happy with that. The only real editing I've do to these is shrink them and make them a little wider and thicker. Each is wielding a single hand weapon and shield, we get a Human Knight, a Skaven Clan Rat, an Orc, a Saurus, a Dwarf Hammerer, and a Goblin Drummer.

To Paint Ghosts:
Base Coat: Scar White Spray paint then paint any weapons or shields "Abaddon Black"
Ghostly Parts: Ink with  "Nikilakh Oxide" then dry brush over with "Scar White"
Leather:  "Kislev Flesh" /w "Skeleton Horde" wash
Bone: "Screaming Skull" /w "Skeleton Horde" Wash
Wood: "XV-88" /w "Agrax Earthshade" Wash
Rope: "Flash Gitz Yellow" /w "Agrax Earthshade" Wash
Stone: "Adminstratum Grey" dry brushed over with "Corax White"
Metal Bitz: "Runefang Steel" & "Gehenna"s Gold" both /w "Agrax Earthshade" Wash

The Spectral Guard, took more work. I found 6 different models with ranged weapons and swapped out their heads or faces for skulls.  We have a Hobgoblin Archer, Bretonian Squire Archer, Empire Crossbowman, Mordhiem Skaven Assassin with Pistol, Wood Elf Waywatcher, and a Long Drong Slayer's Pirate Dwarf.

Similar to the Spectral Guard, I found 6 different models and swapped out their heads or faces for skullss, but this time each model is wielding two one handed weapons to make Revanants. We have Saurus Temple Guard, High Elf Maiden Guard, Mordheim Skaven Assassin, Dwarf Slayer, & Black Orc. The last Revanant I didn't edit, I think it was A.I. generated to turn the mono-pose Witch Elf into a skeleton.

Undead Expansion; Part 1

Its now time to move on to printing and painting expansion monsters. On November 7th, I did a poll on what group of expansion monsters should I work on next.

Undead  got 51% of the vote, so lets begin there. On December 24th I did another poll on which Undead monsters I should start with. Spirit Hosts got 36% of the vote, followed by Bat Swarms at 22% and Spectral Guard at 21%. Both of these polls were done in the Facebook group "Warhammer Quest!".

Spirit Hosts are Ghosts using our custom rules Swarm and Spirit Drain.

Swarm
Swarms may move through any space even if another model or obstacle happens to be there, moving models out of the way like a large monster. While the swarm is adjacent to its target, the target is considered engulfed, losses Never Pinned,  and can’t break pinning.

Close combat attacks, missile attacks, and spells that come from models other than the Swarm and its engulfed victim, that target either of the two models must roll a D6 to see what models are affected by the action. On a 1-3, both the Swarm and engulfed victim, are affected by the action, and on a 4+ only the intended target is affected. Swarms take up a 2x2 space just like large monsters.

Soul Drain
Soul Drain attacks are done one at a time, not in batches. When a model is successfully hit with a Soul Drain attack, they first have their Starting Wounds reduced by (N) this can NOT reduce the Starting Wounds below 1. If this makes their Starting Wounds lower than their Current Wounds, then their Current Wounds becomes equal to their new Starting Wounds. Then they take 1 damage with no modifiers and this damage can’t be Ignore Blowed or Tattooed. Starting Wounds reduced this way return once all enemies with Soul Drain leave the board.

I really wanted these classic Spirit Hosts from 4-5 edition Warhammer Fantasy.

This consists of 3 different ghosts. I was able to find a STL Scan of one model, but not the other two. If I repeated that same one 3 times per base, it might look a little too monotonic. One of the telegram groups I'm in has been playing around with A.I. designed STLs. One of the early tests was to make the above ghosts. These ended up rather close to the originals, so thats what I'm using below. One model is a scan of the originals, the other two are A.I. approximations.

This paint scheme is really simple and fast to paint. Base coat with "White Scar" spray paint. Then ink with "Nikilakh Oxide", followed by dry brushing with "White Scar". This is the same thing I did for my Ghosts, Wraiths, and Banshees.

Next we get Bat Swarms.

I painted these the same as my Giant Bats. Base coat with "Abaddon Black" spay paint. Dry brush with "Adminstratum Grey". Pick out leather of wings with "Mephiston Red", "White Scar" teeth, and "Flash Gitz Yellow Eyes. Lastly used "Agrax Earthshade" wash over wings.

At this point I should do Spectral Guard next, but because how Spectral Guard link with Enslaved Souls and Revenants (and how I choose to make them), I want all three of these monster groups to be in the same article. So lets skip over them, and do Undead Wolves next.

These are 7th edition Undead Wolves (zombie dire wolves).

 Paint Undead Wolves:

Fur: "Corax White" dry brushed over with "White Scar"
Flesh: "Kislev Flesh" /w "Skeleton Horde" wash
Exposed Muscle: "Mephiston Red" /w "Agrax Earthshade" Wash
Exposed Bones: "Screaming Skull" /w "Skeleton Horde" Wash
Teeth : "White Scar"

Last for today, is Carrion. So these models I believe are from 3rd - 4th edition Warhammer Fantasy. They are zombie vultures ridden by Wraiths. Its hard to tell from the pictures but ribs and vertebra are exposed on the model.

 Paint Carrion:

Base Coat: "Abaddon Black" spray paint
Fur & most of Feathers: Drybrush with "Administratum Grey" then wash with "Agrax Earthshade"
Ends of Feathers: "Corax White" dry brushed over with "White Scar"
Leather Wings: "Warpstone Glow" then wash with "Agrax Earthshade"
Exposed Muscle: "Mephiston Red" /w "Agrax Earthshade" Wash
Exposed Bones: "Screaming Skull" /w "Skeleton Horde" Wash
Teeth : "White Scar"
Tongue" "Sotek Green"

Paint Wraith Riders:

Base Coat: "White Scar" spray paint
Spectral Parts: First wash with "Nikilakh Oxide" then dry brush with "White Scar"
Metal Bitz:  "Runefang Steel" & "Gehenna"s Gold" both /w "Agrax Earthshade" Wash
Staff of Scythe: "XV-88"

Wait, they are all done?

Last blog post I mention how our group has added a ton of adventures to our version of Warhammer Quest. We have 204 normal Quests, 24 Dangerous Adventures, 22 Starting Adventures, 54 Side Quests, and 40 Epic Adventures (nearly 350 in total). These all consist of a narrative (even if quite thin), a specific card load out for a dungeon deck, a goal, and a reward for completing that goal. Most of these we wrote, but some are based on GW adventures (like Lair of the Orc Lord or Catacombs of Terror), and some are re-writes of adventures other fans have made.

I bring this up because a few of these added missions have the party fighting the City Guard. Usually its because the city guard are corrupt and you are defending yourself, or it maybe that the City Guard have mistaken you for evil doers and you must fight your way to safety.

Across these missions up to 12 City Guard and one Guard Captain will show up. Empire Helberdiers seem the perfect for this. I believe the base city Guard are using either 3rd or 4th edition Heblberdiers and the Guard Captain is using a 5th or 6th edition model. All of these STLs I found on Telegram.

Guard #1 (3 copies)

Guard #2 (3 copies)

Guard #3 (3 copies)

Guard #4 (3 copies)

 Paint City Guard:

Feathers: "Corax White" dry brushed over with "White Scar"
Half Uniform: "Flash Gitz Yellow"  /w "Agrax Earthshade" Wash
Other Half of Uniform: "Sotek Green" dry brushed over with mix (50% White Scar//50% Sotek Green)
Flesh: "Kislev Flesh" /w "Skeleton Horde" wash
Beards & Mustaches: "XV-88" /w "Agrax Earthshade" Wash
Turban: "Screaming Skull" /w "Skeleton Horde" Wash
Bow Ties, Helberd frills, Top of Hats : "Mephiston Red"  /w "Agrax Earthshade" Wash
Helberd Staff: "Catachan Flesh"
Metal Bitz:  "Runefang Steel" & "Gehenna"s Gold" both /w "Agrax Earthshade" Wash
Boots: "Abaddon Black"

 Paint Guard Captain:

Feathers: "Corax White" dry brushed over with "White Scar"
Half Uniform: "Flash Gitz Yellow"  /w "Agrax Earthshade" Wash
Other Half of Uniform: "Xereus Purple" /w "Agrax Earthshade" Wash
Flesh: "Kislev Flesh" /w "Skeleton Horde" wash
Mustache: "XV-88" /w "Agrax Earthshade" Wash
Metal Bitz:  "Runefang Steel" & "Gehenna"s Gold" both /w "Agrax Earthshade" Wash
Boots & Eye Patch: "Abaddon Black"

All 13 together.

That finishes all 72 Warriors, NPCs, Summons, Were-Forms, & Hireling printed and painted.

Combined that with all 558 monsters already printed and painted and I have 630 models ready to go for Warhammer Quest and it took me just under a year to do. To see all monsters you can check this link.

So now that I have finished everything the base game needs, what next? Expansions of coarse. As I said at the beginning of this blog post, we added tons. One expansion added Type Specific Themed Monster Tables. These tables are D36 instead of D66 (18 results instead of 36 results) and add lots of new monsters. The Themes are Undead, Chaos Daemon, Chaos Beastmen, Chaos General, Skaven, Orc & Goblin, Chaos Dwarf, Dark Elves, Miscellaneous,  Ogre, & Lizardmen. When on a mission and it says "find the nearest Undead result", you instead use the Undead Monster Table instead of the normal one. This allowed us to add say "Bone Giant" which don't appear on the normal monster table, but have them show up in any mission that forces Undead enemies to show up.

These expanded lists add 637 more monsters. That sets up my next goal, finish all these monsters by the end of 2026.

That's all for this post, may your lantern always stay lit.
