Gutter Runners, Bloodletter, Black Orcs and Cookie Sheet #2

I eventually found some better Gutter Runners than these, but they have a simple charm. Someone took the old Clanrat monopose model and turned it into a "Build your own Gutter Runner" model. Its a free down load on cults3d.com and can be found here.

I painted them similar to my clan rats, elf flesh with a brown wash for fur, and black cloths. Of coarse pink tails, noses, and ears.

For Bloodletters, I went back to Tonoborus again. I really like how these turned out.

I found the old monopose black orc on Cults3d.com and its totally not a black orc.

I did some slight editing to this model. shrank the model to 67% of normal size. I then increased the size of its hands and weapons.  I also made a slight alternate version of the model by moving the right hand//sword to a different position.

I can't seem to find where I got this Black Orc Boss.

This completes a 2nd cookie sheet. With a 154 monsters.

I'm up to 330 monsters painted, 530 monsters 3D printed of the 558 needed as of 5/25/25.

That's all for this post, may your lantern always stay lit.

Dwarves, Daemons, Dogs, & Censors.

Time for my first Large Monster, something that takes up 4 spaces. Fiends of Slaanesh. Tonoborus on Cults3d.com provides this model. I decided to paint it up using the classic 4th edition paint scheme (purple skin with bright highlights, red claws and scorpion tail, and green tongue).

Our first Chaos Dwarves, red and gold armor, and black beards. These were also provided by Tonoborus. I did find 2 more shields on Telegram to add some variety.

I'm still hoping to find  5th edition Chaos Hounds. Shown below:

Sadly I could only find 8th editions hounds (found on Telegram), so that's what I painted. If I find the older models I may replace these.

I nabbed these Plague Censors from Telegram.

Pink & Blue Horrors from Tonoborus.

This puts me well over half way done with Old World monsters. And now this blog has actually caught up to me in the real world. 297 monsters painted, 530 monsters 3D printed of the 558 needed as of 5/18/25.

That's all for this post, may your lantern always stay lit.

Getting Level 2 Underway

Gigantic Spiders are kinda weird. These need to be bigger than Giant Spiders but still fit on a normal sized base. Well the Giant Spiders I got from Tonoborus were already slightly bigger than the normal base size. So I suppose we make the Gigantic Spider look noticeably different and taller instead of bigger. "Bob" had a pack of spider STLs that he sent me a copy of, and in there I found a "Skullcap Hermit Spider" I liked. I removed the Spider Legs from that model, then removed the Cephalothorax and abdomen from the old Giant Spider, then combined these two parts to make the new Gigantic Skull Spider. (Word of the Day Cephalothorax, the fused head and thorax parts of a spider or arthropod)

Here is the model I created by combining those two spiders all printed and painted. The original Giant Spider next to them for size comparison.

Update 8/2/25: Tonoborus now provides a Gigantic Spider for 56 cents you can find it here. So the original rules of Quest don't say how many spaces a Gigantic Spider should take up and it doesn't have Large Monster rules. So when re-writing the game, we determined they only took up one space. Tonoborus interpreted that a model can take up 4 spaces but not have Large Monster rules.

Tonoborus's Gigantic Spider (takes up 4 spaces).

Tonoborus provides a Chaos Warrior for free, making me think its just a scan of the original GW model scaled down for Tiny Quest. I did some google image searches for paint scheme ideas when I found this:

I liked the look, so painted up the first 6 Chaos Warrior each half black and half another color (Green for Nurgle, Red for Khorne, Dark Blue for Tzeentch, Purple for Slaanesh, and White and Pink, because why not?). Initially my plan was to just do each color twice (for a total of 12 Warriors). But after showing them off in a Telegram group, someone suggested the picture below made them look like Power Rangers.

Well, if they are Power Ranges, I would clearly need a Yellow Ranger. Filled out the other 5 with Brown, Silver, Grey, Light Blue, and Orange.

Next up, Rat Ogres. I found an old 4th edition STL on Telegram. I still want an old 3rd//4th edition Boneripper. If I find him, he will replace one of these 3, to add a little variety.

Last for today, we get Trolls. Tonoborus has a custom troll model, but I don't really like it and wanted my base Trolls to be River Trolls. I was able to find a pack having 3 different 6th edition River Trolls (I only used one). I probably should have made a 2nd head to give more variety, but these work for now.

Trolls, Rat Ogre, Ogres, and Minotaurs are "large infantry" in Warhammer Fantasy Battles and are usually supplied on a 40mm base. If I only shrank them down to 67% they would be way too big for my current normal sized base. These guys I ended up shrinking to smaller than 67% and then making them skinnier and/or taller. Below is a picture with my Tiny Quest Elf hero, next my Tiny Quest River Troll, then next to an original metal River Troll I had converted and painted to be a Troll Blood Bowl player for my Goblin Team.

This puts me up to 255 monsters painted, 508 monsters 3D printed of the 558 needed as of 5/3/25.

Bases, Centaurs, and the Start of Dungeon Level 2.

Tonoborus provides a small round base with a tile pattern on top with all his miniatures. Seen here

I think this looks great and seems fitting in a dungeon. I've already edited the pattern to have a hole in the bottom for a magnet. The next issue is monsters that take up more than one space in a dungeon.

The first thing to show up needing more than one space is Cavalry monsters (Centaurs, Chaos Hounds, & Bull Centaurs) that take up 2 spaces. Next is Large monsters (Fiend of Slaanesh, Juggernauts, & Griffin) that take up 4 spaces. I wanted the tile pattern on the bases for Cavalry and Large monster bases to match up with the original small bases, not just to be stretched out.

There may have been a quicker way to do this, but I used Blender to disassemble the original bases. Stretch the bases out with no tiles on them, then added the tiles back in, repeat the pattern to the edges, then cutting off any over hang. This took quite a while to complete.

I finished off Cavalry Base (2x1) and Large Base (2x2), then went back and did Gargantuan Base (3x3) and Gargantuan Cavalry Base (4x2). The Gargantuan Bases don't show up until later expansions, but I figured it was easier to get them out of the way now. I also added holes for magnets in these as well. Two magnets for Cavalry Base, Three for Large Base, and Four for each Gargantuan Base type.

Now that we have our Cavalry Base, its time to do our first Cavalry model. Centaurs. Our Black Hills Warhammer Quest has some rules differences from the original game. We added a rule for models that take up two spaces, called Cavalry. They "spawn" in the nearest room not containing a Party Member, and get a free Cav mov when placed. They also get a free "cav" attack if they moved more then 2 spaces in a turn (or Mov 1 or more spaces during the free Cav Mov) and they end that movement next to an enemy. This attack does not benefit from their weapons. This is for all Cavalry Models, not just Centaurs. We also removed the bows from Centaurs. Being archers they would stay in the back and weren't very dangerous, so we gave them "throw spear", something the Beastmen Champions have. Now they move forward and attack in close combat.

Tonoborus has a Centaur model, but its holding a Bow, and has a quiver on its back. This would need to change. I did all sorts of editing to this model, I closed the fingers on the open hand, closer to a fist then a hand releasing an arrow. I removed the bow from the left hand and replaced it with a spear. I bent the  left arm back at both the shoulder and elbow. This left a void between the arm and shoulder blade that I had to fill. I removed the quiver and replaced it with a Sword in scabbard. I also made the model about 20% larger. Tonoborus had the Centaur as big as it could be on a base that takes up one space, I had twice that space on my cavalry base, so I could make the centaurs larger.

I chose to paint these like Clydesdale horses, as the lower half already kinda look like them, having bushy hair near their hooves.

Much like the Minotaur, I would need a champion model. So I found a cool sword, a simple dagger, and used the same daemon shoulder pad from the Minotaur Champion to enhance the Centaur Champion. The scabbard on his back doesn't have a sword in it (since he is wielding it). I again mirrored the model to make it stand out even more from the none upgraded version. Then the final change was to make this Centaur Champion just a little bit bigger then the normal one.

I haven't painted the Centaur Champion yet, I'm still working through Dungeon Level 2, and the champion isn't needed until Dungeon Level 3 (to be used as 5th normal Centaur), then actually starts showing up as a Champion/Hero/Lord at DL 6.

This puts me up to 234 monsters painted, 508 monsters 3D printed of the 558 needed as of 4/15/25.

Tiles, tiles, tiles!

So if the monsters and heroes are at 66% scale size, clearly the dungeon tiles need to be smaller too. To test scale I printed off a few tiles just using printer paper. 66%, 70%, 75%, 80%, and 100%. I placed original sized miniatures on 100% size, then compared that to my mini's sitting on each of the smaller sizes. I ended up liking 75% best. It gave a little extra space per square for mini's.

For a long time, I've had access to high quality scans of the original tiles and many custom tiles other people have made. I went through and resized them, making sure each square took up 26mm then surrounded each tile with 10mm black bar.

Not all squares in the same tile are the same size. For example, The Sewer tile has squares of different sizes, I ended up changing the size of each square individually, looks so much better now. I overlayed a blue rectangle where each door would go. We have added rules that if a tile has a lower level, the warriors always enter at the lower level, for these entrance I added arrows indicating a forced connection. For hallways with many options but only one is used, I changed the bar to yellow.

I was originally going to send these off to boardgamesmaker.com. They require a separate file for your "die lines" and then another file for your color assets. Once I finished making all tiles needed for Old World, I checked their pricing. It would cost about $600 for one set of tiles. If I bought like 40 sets of tiles I could get the price down to like 100 dollars per set. Clearly $600 is too much and 40 copies for $4000 wasn't going to work either.

I began checking local print shops. Office Depot didn't have materials tough enough, neither did The Little Print Shop, nor did Copy Country. The lady at Copy Country suggested I try Simpson Printing (some times called Simpson Signs). They make fulls scale Signs for the sides of buildings. Simpsons had something that could work. 1/8 PVC they could print directly on, then they would use a machine to cut out each tile. Theses sheets were 4 foot wide by 8 foot tall (and 1/8th of an inch thick). I would definitely not have to split any of the tiles into two pieces to get them printed. They were able to take the files I made for boardgamemaker and make exactly what I wanted. They charged by the square foot, coming out just under $140 with tax. This is a price I could handle.

What I had made was all tiles from the original Warhammer Quest 1995 box, all Lair of the Orc Lord tiles, all Catacombs of Terror tiles, and every supplemental tile released in White Dwart I'm aware of, plus the Trap! expansion tiles we wrote, the Chaos Dwarf expansion tiles we wrote, the Dark Elf expansion tiles we wrote, and the Twisted Tunnels expansion tiles we wrote. We did not make the art assets for expansion tiles, we found them online but wrote 6 full adventures for each objective room and any rules needed for each tile.

Here is a video of the main tiles.

Here is the Traps expansion tiles.

Here is the Chaos Dwarf expansion tiles

Here is the Dark Elf expansion tiles

Here is the Twisted Tunnels expansion tiles

I forgot I would need 3x tiles for Wizard spell Pit of Despair and a tile for the dungeon event Cave-In. When I come back to making tiles for Norsca, Lustria, Sewer, and Lost Caverns Expansions, I'll have to remember to add those tiles. I did print off a few doorways at the smaller scale, but have decided when I do print more I'll do so at normal size. This will allow most large models to fit inside the doorway when they are half in one room half in another.

Here is an isometric view of the original tiles with my friend "Bob"s normal scale miniatures on top of image, with my scaled down tiles and miniatures on the bottom half of image.

Ogres, Shamans, Boss, and a finsihed Level 1 Chart.

I just used Tonoborus's Ogre here. I think I painted the first one with red cloths, then the second one with blue cloths. Well, patern was started I had no choice, third one had to have green cloths. I present to you the Power Puff Ogres.

The wife has suggested I repaint their hair braids to further match the Power Puff Girls (black hair for Buttercup, blonde hair for Bubbles, and redish orange hair for Blossom). I will probably do this at some point.

Update on 5/20/25 repainted hair braids.

Next up I got some more STLs from Tilinger (on Thingiverse) originally for Warmaster, so I had to scale them up. Both the the Goblin Shaman and Goblin Boss.

My current Orc Shaman comes from Rockgnome on Thingiverse. This model attempts to be Skabnoze but isn't a scan. I will likely replace it as some point, but this works for now.

This puts me up to 230 monsters painted, 508 monsters 3D printed of the 558 needed as of 4/8/25.

This also means I have all 200 monsters needed for the Dungeon Level 1 Encounters Table. So below I have a video with those 200 monsters spread across 3 cookie sheets.

Ghouls, Dark Elves, & Skaven

Tonoborus starts us off with these two models. Ghoul with Bone and Ghoul doing jazz hands. Printed off 6 of each, makes for a dozen. These painted really fast. Elf Flesh, a brown wash, pick out some white for eyes & teeth. Paint the bone and loin cloth. Good to go.

Next Tonoborus gets us this Naggaroth Black Guard model. Purple Cloaks, lots of Silver metal, picked out a little gold for detail, and yellow hair.
For Skaven Stormvermin I found this from 3D_Print_Cleric on Thingiverse. Somehow I found an alternate version as well (left shoulder pad swapped with right shoulder pad). Lots of silver armor, pink noses, tails, and ears. Picked out some detail in armor as either black or red.
Its at this point we hit my new supply for STLs that I haven't discussed yet. Telegram. There are several "Chat" groups, that share free STLs amongst each other. Many of these are direct scans of GW miniatures and print so close to perfect, once painted I don't think most people can tell they are not originals. If you google Telegram & a useful search term (like Warhammer, Oldhammer, or Mordheim) you can find invite links to these Telegram groups. The plague monks I got from one of these groups. Green Robes, Light Grey hoods, Pink Noses, ears, & tails. The upgraded versions (Plague Priest and Plague Lords) I was thinking would have Red hoods to indicate rank.

This puts me up to 224 monsters painted, 508 monsters 3D printed of the 558 needed as of 4/5/25.
