Tonoborus provides a small round base with a tile pattern on top with all his miniatures. Seen here.
I think this looks great and seems fitting in a dungeon. I've already edited the pattern to have a hole in the bottom for a magnet. The next issue is monsters that take up more than one space in a dungeon.
The first thing to show up needing more than one space is Cavalry monsters (Centaurs, Chaos Hounds, & Bull Centaurs) that take up 2 spaces. Next is Large monsters (Fiend of Slaanesh, Juggernauts, & Griffin) that take up 4 spaces. I wanted the tile pattern on the bases for Cavalry and Large monster bases to match up with the original small bases, not just to be stretched out.
There may have been a quicker way to do this, but I used Blender to disassemble the original bases. Stretch the bases out with no tiles on them, then added the tiles back in, repeat the pattern to the edges, then cutting off any over hang. This took quite a while to complete.
I finished off Cavalry Base (2x1) and Large Base (2x2), then went back and did Gargantuan Base (3x3) and Gargantuan Cavalry Base (4x2). The Gargantuan Bases don't show up until later expansions, but I figured it was easier to get them out of the way now. I also added holes for magnets in these as well. Two magnets for Cavalry Base, Three for Large Base, and Four for each Gargantuan Base type.
Now that we have our Cavalry Base, its time to do our first Cavalry model. Centaurs. Our Black Hills Warhammer Quest has some rules differences from the original game. We added a rule for models that take up two spaces, called Cavalry. They "spawn" in the nearest room not containing a Party Member, and get a free Cav mov when placed. They also get a free "cav" attack if they moved more then 2 spaces in a turn (or Mov 1 or more spaces during the free Cav Mov) and they end that movement next to an enemy. This attack does not benefit from their weapons. This is for all Cavalry Models, not just Centaurs. We also removed the bows from Centaurs. Being archers they would stay in the back and weren't very dangerous, so we gave them "throw spear", something the Beastmen Champions have. Now they move forward and attack in close combat.
Tonoborus has a Centaur model, but its holding a Bow, and has a quiver on its back. This would need to change. I did all sorts of editing to this model, I closed the fingers on the open hand, closer to a fist then a hand releasing an arrow. I removed the bow from the left hand and replaced it with a spear. I bent the left arm back at both the shoulder and elbow. This left a void between the arm and shoulder blade that I had to fill. I removed the quiver and replaced it with a Sword in scabbard. I also made the model about 20% larger. Tonoborus had the Centaur as big as it could be on a base that takes up one space, I had twice that space on my cavalry base, so I could make the centaurs larger.
I chose to paint these like Clydesdale horses, as the lower half already kinda look like them, having bushy hair near their hooves.
Much like the Minotaur, I would need a champion model. So I found a cool sword, a simple dagger, and used the same daemon shoulder pad from the Minotaur Champion to enhance the Centaur Champion. The scabbard on his back doesn't have a sword in it (since he is wielding it). I again mirrored the model to make it stand out even more from the none upgraded version. Then the final change was to make this Centaur Champion just a little bit bigger then the normal one.
I haven't painted the Centaur Champion yet, I'm still working through Dungeon Level 2, and the champion isn't needed until Dungeon Level 3 (to be used as 5th normal Centaur), then actually starts showing up as a Champion/Hero/Lord at DL 6.
This puts me up to 234 monsters painted, 508 monsters 3D printed of the 558 needed as of 4/15/25.
That's all for this post, may your lantern always stay lit.
