My First Full Cookie Sheet

We start today off with 6 Dark Elf Crossbowmen. Purple paint scheme with yellow hair and silver and gold metal bits. Simple enough. (This model from Tonoborus)

Then we need 12x Hobgoblins, each with seperate shields. Most of these guys have slightly different hats. Most of the hats are half one color then half another color. (This model also from Tonoborus)

My first complete Cookie Sheet. In the end, Old World Monster Chart will take up most of 5 Cookie Sheets. Here is a picture and video of the first 176 painted monsters all magnetized on one cookie sheet.

This puts me up to 176 monsters painted, 498 monsters 3D printed of the 558 needed as of 3/24/25.

That's all for this post, may your lantern always stay lit.

Goblins Made Bigger

My goal at this point is to finish all of the Level 1 Monster Encounter Table. Tonoborus is still missing a great deal of the level 1 table. While hunting through Thingiverse.com, I found these models ment for Warmaster scale. They are simple and cute, but would need to be sized up to 20mm scale from 10mm scale.

This group has squigs, squig hunters, and a dude that could be used as goblin netters. Tilinger (the guy on Thingiverse who posted these) seems to have found all these models from other sources, possibly some model editing, resized them to 10mm Warmaster Scale and put them on strips as that game needs for bases.

I like the Netter in the back rank, and use him for Goblin Netters. Scale him up in Blender easily enough. Make times 6 and paint up.

In the back Rank we also have a Goblin with Pokey Stick and a Goblin with Music Cymbals. These should be great for Squig Hunters. Scale them up, make 3 of each and paint them.

I could have used some of the Squigs from this group, but by this time I had found a different source and already printed off 6 Squigs. These were from NinjaWolfHybrid also on Thingiverse.com. You can find the 4 different models I used in here. I had to remove their bases as they were designed for Hero Quest instead of Warhammer Quest. I'm sure I also resized them. Here they are painted.

Lastly we have the Fanatics. I'm not sure where I got these. I printed one model twice and one model once. One of them I broke and lost the Ball and chain on accident, so the the guy who is upside down is glued to a ball I made out of green stuff that is pinned into the base.

This puts me up to 158 monsters painted, 437 monsters 3D printed of the 558 needed as of 3/15/25. That's all for this post, may your lantern always stay lit.

4 Warriors and their 87 Enemies

Tonoborus has a simple Warrior Pack for the main 4 dungeon divers.

I had painted the Elf quite a while ago, but it was time to finish off the other 3 main warriors. I kept the paint schemes rather close to the classic schemes. Though, I gave my Barbarian a Polar Bear pelt instead of a Brown or Black Bear pelt.

With those 4 out of the way, that makes a first big milestone. I now have printed and painted, all 91 minatures that come in the original 1995 Warhammer Quest box.
12 Giant Spider
12 Giant Bats
12 Giant Rats
12 Snotlings
6 Goblin Spearmen
6 Goblin Bowmen
6 Orc Swordsmen
6 Orc Bowmen
12 Skaven Clanrats
3 Minotaurs
A Barbarian
A Elf
A Dwarf
A Wizard

Lets see them all at once:

This puts me up to 137 monsters painted, 408 monsters 3D printed of the 558 needed. Then 4 Warriors painted, 12 warriors 3D printed of the 52 needed (warriors+NPCs+summons). As of March 8th, 2025. That's all for this post, may your lantern always stay lit.

Theseus's Nemesis

So I'm aiming for the nostalgia of the 90s for most of my Warhammer Quest miniatures. What is more nostalgic than that old plastic minotaur wielding a club (or if you were lucky to have the one wielding an axe)? There is just one problem with this model. It has human feet. I despise human feet on a minotaur. It should be hooves. Whats a guy with apparently too much free time and access to blender to do?

So pictured below we have 3 minotaurs I had found. The one to the left is Tonoborus's minotaur. It didn't look enough like the original Warhammer Quest minotaur for me and it had those human feet, so it's a no go. The one in the middle came from the Warhammer Quest! facebook group. I asked if anyone had the original Minotaur, and someone there did have one he had personally made. Its not a scan of the original and has more detail than the original model. Its pretty sweet. (I'm not saying his name intentionally, as I'm not sure if he would prefer to stay anonymous). This hits the nostalgia perfectly, but still suffers from human feet. And lastly the Minotaur to the right we have a Minotaur with hooves and about the detail level I'm looking for. This is from Evilhippie on Thingiverse. You can download the original model here for free.

So its time to blender these guys! I started with Facebook Minotaur and Thingiverse Minotaur. Cut each in half and stitched them together. This got me to about 80% of where I wanted to be. Sadly as you can see in the picture below, my Minotaur now has a codpiece // diaper combo goin on. Where the models join is defiantly the weak point.

Then I remembered, I have the Tonoborus model. I was able to steal his chain-mail bikini. I first removed the codpiece and then joined the bikini front and back. I'm calling this perfect. Exactly what I wanted. Reminiscent of the original Warhammer Quest Minotaur with the added bonuses of hooves and no diaper.

But we aren't quite done yet. We need a Champion/Hero/Lord model. So upgrades. Well lets remove the club. Give him axes. A little extra armor in the form of a shoulder pad, then mirror the whole thing so he isn't standing in the exact same way as the others (plus make him just a little taller). And there we have it, the upgraded Minotaur.

Now its time to paint. I have a rather large Beastmen Army. They are painted like polar bears (white fur, black skin). All the leather they have is made to look like human skin. Cause you know cows want to get even for leather jackets and such. I used that paint scheme on my beastmen for Quest, might as well keep it up for the Minotaurs too.

I haven't painted the Minotaur Champion yet, he doesn't show up until Dungeon Level 3 (still working on Dungeon Level 2).

This puts me up to 137 monsters painted, 408 monsters 3D printed of the 558 needed. As of March 8th, 2025.

That's all for this post, may your lantern always stay lit.

Keeping Track

There are an absolute ton of monsters, Warriors, summons, & NPCs in Warhammer Quest. Even more so if you use our re-write of the game (currently over 1,200 miniatures with Warriors). This can be tough to keep track of. How many models have I found STL's for? How many models have I printed? How many have I painted?

As it so happens, I'm kinda methodical about almost everything I do. So I have some google sheets that answer all these questions.

I have one built around Monsters by Model Type (grouping normal, champion, heroes, and lords together). You can find a blank version of it here. You can copy it and fill it in for your own use.

I have a 2nd one built around Monster by Dungeon Level, so if Dugneon Level 1 only needs 6 Plague Monks, only 6 show up there, then the next 6 show up on Dungeon Level 3. You can find a blank version of it here. You can copy it and fill it in for your own use.

Because we made changes to the normal Monster Encounter Table, I need to know how many of each model I needed and how many of each upgraded version of each model I needed (IE, how many normal, champions, heroes, & Lords). The Monsters by Model Type Spreadsheet shows how many models of each monster are needed at each Dungeon Level, and how many of each of their upgrades are needed as well.

Some monsters like Ogres, you only really need 3 normal Ogres, because the Champion Ogres never show up with normal Ogres. So for both versions of the enemy you can use the same model. However, some Normals will be lead by a champion. On rare occasions normals, will be joined by Champions and Heroes. For Example on Level 7, 8x Beastmen Champions are joined by 3x Beastmen Heroes and 1 Beastmen Lord. On my chart if a number of models is in Brackets that means it is accompanying a downgraded version of itself. If a line has both a number in bracket and number not in brackets, the not in brackets is how many show up on that level not with downgraded versions of itself. This can be seen in the following image.

If you are interested in what monsters we added with expansions, they are all listed in the Monsters by Model Type spread sheet linked above.

I have another spread sheet for keeping track of how many spaces each model needs for building out how models will be stored on cookie sheets. Each of my cookie sheets can hold 176 spaces (11 x 16). Some models take up 2 spaces like Centaurs, some take up 4 spaces like Greater Daemons. Once I move into expansions, some take up 8 spaces (2x4) and some take up 9 spaces (3x3).

I have a spread sheet for how the models will be grouped up on their cookie sheets for ease of finding stuff once I'm done with old world. This will need 5 cookie sheets.

Then I have the end goal for all 1,200 + miniatures cookie sheet layout, needing 12 cookie sheets. The eventual plan is to build 3 boxes that each store 4 cookie sheets, so if I need to I can transport all the miniatures at once.

You can look at my current model progress, cookie sheet layouts, and such here.

Orcs, Skeletons, and Zombies!

Normal Orc Infantry. Using Tonoborus's model. The teeth and metal studs on leather armor where kinda of a pain to paint.

Orc Archers. Using Tonoborus's model.

Skeleton Swordsman. Using Tonoborus's model. One of the skeletons snapped in two while removing his supports, right where his spine meets his pelvis. I glued him back together facing a different direction than the others. He has a slightly more dramatic pose (he's the middle guy in back row).

I have been slightly tempted to replace Tonoboru's Skeleton Warriors with the race specific skeletons from Dogs of War, pictured here, just haven't been willing to dedicate the time to reprint stuff thats done, when there are so many things not yet done.

Skeleton Bowmen. Using Tonoborus's model. These like the skeleton warriors painted rather fast.

Zombies. Using Tonoborus's model. When printing these, one model's leg simply fell off, it must have shifted during the print and so wasn't connected to the body. So its a zombie, what should I do? Of coarse his leg fell off and ends in a pool of blood underneath him. Sure he is currently Looney Tooning it, as he has no idea his leg feel off.

I painted each zombie with different body damage. Patches of missing skin, revealing the top of the skull here and there. A few I used my exact-o knife to remove the nose, eye and/or jaw and painted in the damage. The last fellow I spent a bit of time cutting an arm off and the other hand, letting me swing the axe around so he is dragging the axe and missing an arm. All of these edits were done post printing, just a knife, some glue, and paint to sell the effects.

This puts me up to 134 monsters painted, 386 monsters 3D printed of the 558 needed. As of March 8th, 2025.

That's all for this post, may your lantern always stay lit.

But do they stick together?

At this point I have almost 100 miniatures painted. I knew as I started this project I would eventually want all monsters and heroes magnetized for ease of storage and/or transportation. It took a little research but the wife and I found a great deal on some reasonably powerful but tiny magnets. 750 magnets for under $50. I'm assuming I'll put one magnet per model on a normal base, two magnets per Cavalry base, and three magnets per large base. I haven't actually done the math to figure out if 750 magnets is enough, it will be close, but after I'm done with the 558 monsters for Old World the plan is to continue on and do the expansions we wrote which will go well beyond the need of 750, so I'll need to make a 2nd order eventually anyways.

These magnets are 1/8 inch Diameter circles that are 1/16 inch height. Pull force rating of 1/2 pound. I can put over 150 models each with their own magnet on a cookie sheet and hold the whole thing upside down with no fear of any of them falling off. These magnets can be found here.

The bases I had made to this point, had no holes for magnets. Resin is kinda nasty stuff you don't want to breath in. So I ended up using full dust mask and goggles while dremel drilling holes for the magnets.

For all future models and to save tons of time, I edited the base I use in Blender, to have the hole pre-built into the print. The hole is slightly off center so its directly under a large square tile on the top. I do have to take a 1/6 drill bit and hand turn the bit to clean the hole, so the magnets fit neatly inside.

Here is a photo of the 92 miniatures already painted, all magnetized to a cookie sheet. We bought the cookie sheets at Dollor General store, they were under $2 each. The important part here was each cookie sheet is made of a metal that magnets stick to and that they were identical in shape so later I can build a box for them to slide into. This puts me up to 92 monsters painted & magnetized, 250 monsters 3D printed of the 558 needed. As of February 13th, 2025.

Goblins and thier Napoleon Complex

Gotta have gobos. I maintained the red shoes, but since they didn't have the Night Goblin hats, I painted them more like generic goblins. One of the goblins, his foot didn't print so I green stuff sculpted the missing appendage so we didn't have to 3D print a whole extra goblin.

I have been posting pictures of my progress on Tiny Quest in a facebook group: Warhammer Quest!. A common question I get is just how small are these guys. Since I usually post picture of the mini's with no regular sized models around them and call it "tiny quest", people tend to think they are much smaller than they really are. A normal Warhammer Fantasy Battles goblin is on a 20 mil base. Slightly larger infantry like Chaos Warriors and Hero Characters are often on 25 mil bases. Large infantry like Minotaurs and Trolls are on 40 mil bases. All of these I'm putting on 20 mil bases. That means the goblins base is way big for their size, its a good fit for human sized infantry, and a bit small for Large infantry.

For size comparison here are several pictures, comparing the original models to my tiny quest models.

Tiny Elf, next to normal Elf, with Tiny Bat next to normal Bat, and Tiny Beastmen next to normal Beastmen.

Tiny Black Orc next to Normal Black Orc and Tiny Clanrat next to normal Clanrat.

Tiny Gobo /w Bow next to normal Gobo /w Bow, Tiny Gobo /w Spear next to normal Gobo /w Spear and Tiny Spider next to normal Spider.

All Tiny minis shown are on 20 mil round bases. Normal Elf and Black Orc are on 25 mil square bases. Normal Beastmen on 25 mil round base. Normal Clanrat, Gobos, and Spider are on 20 mil square bases.

When re-sizing models in Blender, I usually make them 67% of normal size (x, y, & z). Then if they seem too skinny I make the 1.2 times fatter and thicker (x & y).

I use the Elf hero for determining the correct size for most other models. I consider him 6ft tall and try to size other things from there.

This puts me up to 92 monsters painted, 250 monsters 3D printed of the 558 needed. As of February 2nd, 2025.

The mobs of Tiny bitey things

Knocking out some of the 12x Mobs of little monsters.

First up Snotlings. Tonoborus had his Snotling on a "cube", I wanted everything to have matching bases, this was a rather simple edit in Blender using the Knife tool. Simple model, simple paint scheme, quickly knocked out all 12.

Next Giant Rats. Tonoborus had his Rats on a "cube", so did the same edit as with the Snotlings.

I'm not sure why, but I felt each rat should have a different pattern and/or fur color. So with a quick google search I found this.

So with that in mind, each of the 12 rats has a different paint scheme.

The last Bitey thing needing painting was Giant Bats. Tonoborus's Bats are on a simple no detail circle base, held aloft by a pole. Again wanting consistent bases between all models, I used the knife tool in blender, then combined the Bat and pole directly to the base with tiles. So what you see below is printed on one object (Base, Pole, & bat).

I gave the bats red wings, as I have done with all my flying units in my Beastmen Army. I just like the way this looks.

This puts me up to 80 monsters painted, 226 monsters 3D printed of the 558 needed. As of January 27th, 2025.
